bringing a 16th century house into the modern era, 'home farm' is an extension to a country estate in gloucestershire,
england, completed by the london-based de matos ryan. the addition links an eight gabled historical home and two ancillary
outbuildings which borders the church in the cotswolds. adapting to the needs of the inhabitants, the steel and glass structure
contains an open plan kitchen and living area while the updates to the grade II listed residence has been refurbished to include
another bedroom and bathroom. after years of neglect, exposed stonework and mortaring as well as the timber-framed lath
and plaster walls have been repaired while modern windows matching the original leaded lights were installed.
interior elements such as staircases, bathroom fixtures and doors are treated as furniture pieces and were upgraded to introduce
a contemporary atmosphere.
cut into the sloping terrain, the garden pavilion' glass enclosure allows the kitchen area to be opened to the grounds while its
winged roof directs views towards the stone facade and solid retaining wall of the upper level churchyard. a connecting barn
has been converted into an extra guest suite overlooking the yard. the limestone and oak cladding will age gracefully to unify the
buildings into landscape.
