Along with the Recreation Center by Morphosis, the University of Cincinnati in Ohio received the Aronoff Center for Design and Art (DAAP) by Peter Eisenman and local firm Lorenz & Williams. Parts of an existing building were renovated and parts were added. This piece questions the role of art in an increasingly fragmented world.
A large staircase in the central spine separates the old and new deconstructionist building precariously. Soft layers emerge from the landscape and interact with existing modernist brick. The structure teeters at times and stands firm at other times.
Completed in 1996, this project gave a clear indication what direction Eisenman's tectonics would go.
