Seattle Public Library
Seattle / USA, 2004
Description Architect: Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) with LMN Architects
Seattle’s 412,000ft2, LEED® Silver-certified central library occupies a full downtown block, serving as the technology and service hub for the city’s library system.
The distinctive diagrid façade, designed for energy-efficient performance and maximum daylight, provides views from 90% of all regularly occupied spaces. The structural design enables expansive, multi-level atria. To maintain the design’s challenging interior layout of interconnected spaces, Arup consultants analyzed various fire, smoke management and evacuation scenarios and implemented cost-effective solutions.
Arup’s comprehensive services included structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering, in addition to fire/life safety, security, audio visual, and information technology and communication consulting.
