Falling Water, Revisited: Modern Green Pool-Cooled Home

The Frank Lloyd Wright home featuring a flow-through waterfall may be the most recognizable residential design in modern history, but for all of its innovations its construction was extremely costly, not to mention the subsequent renovations required to hold its structure together over time. If that was the prototype for integrating moving water into houses, then this design may be one of the best executions of a contemporary, environmentally-integrated approach.

Tree-Inspired House Has Green Canopy & Geothermal Roots

Concepts play a central role in architectural studio projects, but sometimes grow into real-life buildings as well Whether this ‘house tree’ was too literally developed or well-designed is still up for debate, though the sketched diagrams from Ignatov Architects are impressive either way.

Thrice-Sliced Steel Silo Used as a Single-Story Solar Home

One key to sustainable design is going local, so with many old rural grain silos having already gone vacant they make for prime prefabricated old parts for potential new homes. This student project shows one way in which one could cut apart an existing storage silo and use each slide as part of a novel residential structure.

Montecito Residence a single-family home

Montecito Residence is a single-family home set in the fire-prone Toro Canyon. The owners wanted a house that minimized its use of scarce natural resources and recognized the challenging environmental conditions of the area. The design solution is a house that functions as an umbrella to shield the house from the sun and allows naturally cool offshore breezes to move through the space. The house is made of simple, fire resistant materials. Steel will be allowed to oxidize and concrete will be toned to allow the house to blend into the landscape.

Explosive Mix: Regional Cabin Meets Concrete Modernism

The entire time I lived in Seattle, there was something about architecture of the Northwest that defied description but defined much of the amazing work found in the area. This lake house (designed by Tom Kundig but built in Northern Idaho) embodies some of the best aspects of regional Modernism that spreads out from around Puget Sound. Pop the top, and see what surprises burst from the box.
